Songwriting Chords and Melody: Scale Passing Notes

In the previous songwriting lessons we discussed long and short notes and how they can be used in a melody. We also discussed chord notes, non chord notes, scale notes and non scale notes.

In this example we are not just going to look at the melody, but how the melody can be used to make chord changes and progressions sound smoother. And of course what this does for the melody.

Take a look at the next sheet music example and listen to it. The chords are Am and G.

The long notes are all chord notes. This simply sounds great, not in any way special. But it works. As you can see this melody also follows another basic melody prinicple. A clear rhythm, in fact it's so simple, and there are just a few notes, you might not even consider this a melody. What's more interesting is the short notes that are used.
