Recording Dance Vocals: What are Plosive Sounds?

Plosive sounds are part of our language. So there is really no way to avoid them. So when you are recording dance vocals there is really no way of avoiding them. Plosive sounds are created by the singer when flow of air through the mouth and nose is blocked and released.

The plosive sound starts with a closure of the mouth and/or nose. The flow of air builds up and finally the closure is released, creating an explosion of air. The explosion of air creates a strong sound/pressure wave which some microphones can't deal with or cause the signal to overload or clip.

But plosive sounds are note created with all vowels and consonants. Try saying all letters from the alphabet and try to find the plosive sounds. You will find them easily if you remember that you need to find the letters that start with a burst of air. Plosive sounds can also not be maintained. Once you release the air the sound has ended. This makes the 'A' or any vowel not a plosive sound by definition.
