Vocals are the most important part in music, period. Although in some music styles with many loud guitars and other instruments they may not always be completely on top, in most music styles, and especially most modern Pop, R&B, Rap, Dance, country and other styles the music is sometimes about half of the volume of the sound.

Although you don't always have to follow normal mixing rules that are used for mixing songs on albums the vocals should have an important position in the mix and you need to make sure during the sound check that you have these right.
