Hi, everyone. I have always loved the sound of the bass guitar and finally took the plunge two days ago and bought one. When I was in the shop the assistant was talking about power chords on the bass and played some of them on the bass I bought. Sounded great but now I can't seem to find any info on how to play them Is there anyone out there who knows of books/web sites which have tab pictures of how to finger power bass chords. I have gone to various sites and they describe in writing the various chords but do not actually provide pictures of how I physically form these chords on my bass. On my lead it was so simple, there are books you can buy which actually put various chords into easy to understand pictures. If anyone out there can help please let me know I know this is probably a laughably basic question but please don't forget I'm an absolute beginner. By they way, I only practiced lead guitar for about 8 months before giving it up. I have regretted it ever since and hope to also get back into that as well. Who knows, if ever I do get good maybe I'll be in the line up of the next AC/DC, Nirvana, Foo Fighters et al. But then again, at 33, I guess I'm probably too much of an old fart by now but would still love to emulate the music I love. PS: if anyone can help me you can e-mail me at: haarparcohaarp51.greatxscape.net

Cheers, guys

Im not sure if my idea of a power chord is correct, but let me give a very graphic example. . .

----------------------
O = the fret in which you should pulsate
----------------------

Normal note:
E A D G / E A D G
o
|| || || || or || || || ||
|| || || || || || || ||
|| o || || || || || ||
|| || || || || || || ||
|| || || || || || || ||

Power Chord:
E A D G / E A D G
o
|| || || || or || || || ||
|| || || || || o o ||
|| o || || || || || ||
|| || || || || || || ||
|| || o o || || || ||

A power chord is basically playing the base note plus an octave higher and the same fret as the octave but in the string in the middle of the base and octave. . .

Just play them like on a normal guitar.

i play them once in a while when it's appropriate. usually only in the upper octaves, playing only the root note and the fifth. just experiment some. try playing the open d, along with messing around with the g, playing with the fifth, seventh, eleventh, and twelfth frets. after some time, you can teach yourself basic things and learn how notes work together. if you finger pick at all, that sounds pretty good too. just that playing chords and such can often clutter a song. less is more! just practice, practice, practice and when your doing that, concentrate on what you're doing. if you're looking to play commercial type stuff, it shouldn't take too long. those type of players seem to like being uncreative. bass and guitar can work well together if both players are listening to the other. the bass doesn't just have to be simply a lower octave guitar. you wanna hear creative bass, go buy Fragile by Yes, or Stand by Sly and the Family Stone, and last but not least, Gratitude by Earth, Wind and Fire....it's not NIrvana, but it's much more interesting to listen to and isn't "i'm so pissed off and unhappy" like the crap around right now. no i'm not old, i'm 26...just that great music sometimes has to grow on you...if you give it a chance......enough of my soapbox b.s. good luck!
