There are many appropriate options but to be safe, look for a squire or other cheap fender jazz bass.
They can be found in any city and are quite reasonably priced.
Plus you have name recognition when it comes time to sell.
I recommend the jazz bass rather than precision because of the extra pickup. It provides some added tone options.

Good Luck,
Dave

Mark,

If you are looking for a good bass at a resonable price, I suggest you check out Ibanez. You get get a high quality instrument beggining at about $400. If you are looking for something a bit more pricy. . . . Check out Musicman- I am a bit biased on this one, but I own 2, and I love them both!

Happy shopping.

Bass is a strange instrument to buy (well they all are actually). Even two basses made exactly the same will feel different in your hands. And that is the key.

The first thing to look for is how it feels in your hands. A lot of beginners prefer "thin" neck 4 string basses like a fender jazz or a G & L L2000 because they tend to "fit" your hand easier. Once you have the right fit, now listen to the tone. Play striaght through a bassman, GK or hartke head in the store with no effects to give you the cleanest sound. If you are a novice, ask the sales guy to set up the amp clean anmd have him. Her walk you through whatever controls there are.

For me, the right basses "came" to me. They felt right and their tone was beautiful. I currently play a G&L L2000 4 string, Tobias Custom 5 String and a Fender Jazz Fretless 4 string with the G&L my workhorse. Ive played and had the Ibanez Soundgear series as well - not abad instrument, just didnt fit well for me.

Hope this helps!

As a pro player and having worked part-time for a couple of different music stores over the years, I can only tell you that you rarely see a "used" Carvin bass in the stores. Why? you ask. . . Because everyone that buys one keeps it. They are hands-down the best value out there. They play well, sound great and hold up through decades of abuse. Check out the "bunny brunell" models five-strings online at the carvin website.

Hi Mark,
Is it for you? Are you a beginner?
If you're a beginner, don't spend too much money, first time 'round. Just find one you like the feel and sound of.
Everyone has different things that they like in an instrument. Untill you find the things you like in an instrument there is no point spending a lot of money.
You can't really go wrong at this stage because most of the new cheap basses play fairly well.

If you know someone who plays (even just a little), take them with you when you shop. That's all i can think of right now, Good luck,
Sincerely,
Patrick Bettison
