What is slapping?

Slapping is a bass technique which was first used in funky types of music by bassists to get a very percussive bass sound from the bass guitar. You can get this sound by slapping the side of your thumb against the string, most bass players use the slapping technique by slapping on the string around the 20th fret or so | Brian

I would add that what really makes slapping impressive is the complicated rhythms you can achieve by combining it with left hand hammer-ons or plucking octave notes. For that reason, it's also known as the "slap-pop" or "slap-pluck" technique. | Dave Boy

Slapping and popping is a way of showing real talent because it allows both hands to be more independant, when you get really good with the percussive sounds of this style it can almost seem as though you are accompannying yourself
