Not looking to win any Marshall or Fender popularity awards - but - why use a valve amp for bass? It's not as if chord harmonics are an issue (much!). If you want 'punch' get a seriously watty top and keep your options open for use of 4x10, 2x12 or 1x15 etc. , as required. Valve amps have always been more expensive to maintain and the argument about 'solid state vs valves ('tubes')' will go on forever. If you really feel that valves are a 'must have' sound (for a bass!) then choose an amp with a valve and a solid-state power stage. This was the original basis of the Peavey range - back in the late 70's !!!!

i have a 69 bassman. i play bass guitar and i presently have Svetlana tubes in it. this is only because i was told these were the best. i'm not very knowledgeable in this area. i just wonder, is there anybody out there who has a bassman (or a similar amp), and can recommend another kind of tube? i want the punchiest sound and least distortion. i do like the slightly muddy "old" sound, but if i push it past 5, it gets to be a little much sometimes. thanks

Yo James,

The most important thing about buying tubes is the hardness. Your bassman gets distorted because your tubes are fairly soft. Try getting a harder tube. They are rated from 1-10. Go with about a 7 or 8, and you will still have a lil of that grit at higher volumes but it will push a lot more power before doing so.

Btw i prefer Groove Tubes.

no way! your bassman distorts because it only has 50 watts to work with! No tube change will help you. Get a head with 200 watts or more for undistorted power
