Since you've played guitar and piano, I'm assuming you learned various scales. Scales are boring to everyone at first, but are essential to creating bass lines that not only work but can be extremely tasty! Not to mention being wonderful warmups. And, if you happen to be trying to do the session musician route like I am - they don't do tab!

i am new to the bass (like 3 weeks) after 25+ years of playing guitar/piano. a lot of the sheet music i have does not include the bass - is there an easy way to figure it out???

Is there ever an easy way to do anything? It all comes down to how good your ears are. If you just want to hold down a bass line and you're not really concerned with learning a particular bass part note for note, start with just playing the lowest note in whatever key you're in, a-la AC/DC. Then throw in fills over the changes. Pentatonic always works. If you're learning a cover song, try to pick out distinctive fills as written, and incorporate those into your bassline. If you learn a few of them accurately, it goes a long way toward making people think you know the song. The simple fact is, most people don't really pay close attention to the bassline anyway, and if you fake it pretty well no one will know the difference. FYI, there is a lot of bass tab floating around on the internet. You can usually find it by searching for the song title. Some of it is not very accurate though | |
