Alesis introduces the PlayMate Vocalist, a powerful vocal remover and microphone processor. With an internal stereo CD player, the PlayMate Vocalist is the perfect piece of equipment for vocal performance, music education, and karaoke applications.

The PlayMate Vocalist can remove vocals from virtually any stereo CD. It also performs sophisticated tasks such as changing the music tempo without affecting the pitch, and changing the pitch without affecting the tempo. This allows a vocalist to always sing a song in the optimal key, and to adjust the tempo to change the feel of the music. Tempo and key adjustment can also be made for practice purposes. The PlayMate Vocalist can transpose music ±7 semitones (or half-steps), and adjust the pitch ±8%. The tempo range is from 50% to 150%.

The PlayMate Vocalist includes 100 high-quality reverb algorithms, allowing the singer to be heard in a huge variety of ambient spaces. A vocalist can easily match the ambiance of the music, or use reverb effects more creatively. The PlayMate Vocalist has one microphone input, two headphone outputs, and stereo balanced line outputs.

I bought this equipment seeing this advertisement.

I tried to remove vocals from audio CD's using this equipment. I tried to remove voice from songs on more than 50 different CD's. I tried on different types of CD's both Western and International (Indian Songs). It was not able to REMOVE the vocals from any of them. For some of them it reduced the volume but you can still hear the song 'nicely'.

Removing Vocals and Reducing the Vocal Volume are not the same. When it is advertised that it "REMOVES" the vocals from any CD, I expect it to remove the vocals completely rather than reducing the vocal volume. I don't know if I am misunderstanding anything here.

I would like to hear from anyone, if somebody was able to remove voice from any CD with this instrument.

Did you use it on older songs, like frank sinatra etc where the mix was originally easier to separate

In the past equipment like this have not removed the vocals entirely, and l have been trying to find a distributor in scotland so as I can try out before buying. . I find your thoughts very worthwhile, and will add them to my judgement when I try this piece out myself. . The vocalist playmate says it removes all vocals from cd's, but in the past this has proved to be incorrect,(from likewise components) and I await with bated breath to see if this does it. . Thanks for your concerns on the Alesis Playmate. . . I too am looking for a rig like this that we can use in an application where the drummer and bass are playing along with tacks for live performance. . . . If this thing could actually talkout the vocals, it would be a huge benefit to us in our live peformances. Maybe its too good to be true. . . . You must all understand that removing vocals is still a very new technology, and although it can be done, or seem to be done on karaok machines, it;s not. If you understand sound engineering you would know that vocals usually cover the center of the bandwidth of the song, but can vary throughout. Harddware or software like this reverses/polarizes on half of the bandwidth, so it's negative, while the other side is positive. This cancels out the signal of the vocal, but it's not one hundred percent acurate if the vocals cover the entire bandwidth. So to be honest, their is no "magic box" out their that will completely get rid of vocals, harddware or software. Not yet anyway. I know this because I have spent several weeks doing hardcore research in this area
